Vùng Trà Vinh từ xưa, xưa lắm thường xuyên bị chằn tinh quấy phá. Phật thương tình chỉ cho con người cách diệt trừ loài quỷ hung hăng. Chằn tinh gian ngoan, xảo quyệt, dân làng phải đánh đến lần thứ ba mới hạ được nó. Nơi chằn tinh quằn quại giãy chết, dân làng gọi là ao Phật.
