Rootabaga Stories

Carl Sandburg has been loved by generations of children with Stories of Rootabaga, a series of bizarre, sometimes melancholy stories he originally created for his daughters. The Rootabaga story arose out of Sandburg's desire for "American fairy tales" to fit American childhoods. He felt that European stories involving royalty and knights were inappropriate, and so his stories were included in animals, skyscrapers, trains, corn fairies and other colorful characters.
