The Amateur Cracksman is the premier collection of stories about A. J. Raffles, the gentleman, the cricketer, and the thief. After arresting his old schoolmate, Bunny Manders, from a desperate suicide attempt, Raffles introduced Bunny to a new way of making a living, that of theft. Though frequently appalled by Raffles' actions, the aware Bunny aids him in all their adventures, concluding his promise: "When you want me, I'll be your man!"
