Ngày xưa có hai vợ chồng nhà nọ , nhà nghèo lại phải nuôi một đàn con đang tuổi ăn tuổi chơi. Hai vợ chồng làm lụng hết sức mà vẫn không kiếm đủ sống. Có một năm trời đại hạn, nạn đói diễn ra khắp mọi nơi,hai vợ chồng cố đi kiếm việc làm nhưng chẳng ai thuê. Cuối cùng, nhà hết gạo người cha phải vác thuổng lên rừng đào củ mài . Đào mãi, sức đã kiệt mà vẫn không được gì. Nghĩ đến đàn con nheo nhóc và cảnh chết đói, ông ngồi ôm mặt khóc nức nở.
